Traveling Them Thar Hills

Elephant Butte Lake State Park

Elephant Butte Lake State Park, near T or C, New Mexico, is a quiet, peaceful, and beautiful State Park. We stayed at South Monticello Campground, and if the lake wasn’t so drastically low, the water would have been lapping at our camp site. The RV sites are large and clean with plenty of room between each one and with great views of the mountains across the lake. Some of them are pull throughs large enough to hold 3 40′ RVs with ease. As you get closer to the lake the sites are 30 amp, but the ones further away are 50 amp. The bathroom facilities too are nice and clean. On our return trip, in the fall (IF it isn’t too hot for us Oregonians next November), our choice for a camp site will be either site 18 or 24 – those seem to have the best views of the lake and plenty of privacy.
The lake is huge in its present state which is 15 % of capacity, so we can only imagine how wonderful it will be with more water. We kayaked across the lake (about 1.5 miles) and then kayaked along the shoreline for several miles. Many water fowl to view, and very peaceful and nice. It was a pleasant 6.5 mile paddle as you can see in a photo below.
We will return this fall or winter, the sunsets alone are worth the trip.
Enjoy the pictures below.
